I am in shock at how fast this summer has flown by. I’ve been on a mini-sabbatical from work most of July and August which has had me outdoors and away from the computer for extended periods of time. Taking a break from the daily grind has been a blessing for my soul and I am grateful for the opportunities the Lord has given me. However, with all the time spent outdoors this summer, I’ve fallen behind on my writing and have a lot of catching up to do…. So here goes… Father’s Day Camping at Wickiup
With the exception of 2016 when I was drowning in work, my boys and I have made a tradition of getting away for a guys only Father’s Day weekend camping / fishing trip. We started this a few years ago trolling and plunking for rainbows at Diamond Lake. This year, we did a return trip to Wickiup Reservoir, the head waters of the Deschutes River and home to a ton of kokanee. We’ve had a couple family friends move to Bend earlier this year so we invited my friend Ryan and his two boys that have been good friends to Gavin and Garrett.
I originally booked this trip thinking I’d have a boat but as it turned out, this trip was of the boatless, bank fishing variety. We had a tough time catching fish on Wickiup so we headed up the road to Twin Lakes for some trout plunking. We did manage to hook a few fish but when you get four rowdy boys together, the priority is building forts and climbing things. No monster fish to write home about but not doubt a great memory these boys will keep for a long time
